Rumor has it that Nvidia will follow its ultra-powerful RTX 4090 with a even more powerful RTX 4090 Ti – but now the company is rumored to have been a little ambitious with its next flagship GPU.
According to a YouTube video from Moore’s Law is Dead (which you can watch below), the alleged Nvidia RTX 4090 Ti could actually be a new RTX Titan Ada. In the past, Titan GPUs were no-holds-barred graphics cards aimed more at creative professionals than gamers, and come with a price to match.
We haven’t seen a Titan card since the RTX Titan in 2018, which is based on the ‘Turing’ architecture of Nvidia’s RTX 2000 series, so a new Titan appearing soon wouldn’t be completely out of the realms of possibility.
However, according to Moore’s Law is dead, new rumors suggest we may not see the new GPU anytime soon, regardless of whether it’s called the RTX 4090 Ti or the RTX Titan Ada.
Analysis: Too ambitious?
The reason the new GPU is killed – or at least put on hold indefinitely – is because it appears to be too ambitious. According to Moore’s Law Is Dead, a respected source claimed that the new GPU would have a TDP (Thermal Design Power – essentially the power demands of the card) of around 600 to 700 watts. While this is less than some rumors, it’s still a massive power draw that would be too much for all but the most powerful and expensive PSUs (Power Supply Units).
The new GPU would also have the full AD102 chip, rather than a scaled-down version found in the RTX 4090, and would require two 16-pin power connectors.
The new GPU would also take up four slots on a case, making it substantially larger than the RTX 4090 – which is already a massive graphics card. This can make it difficult for many people to be able to install it on their PCs even if they have a proper PSU.
In fact, the GPU can be so large that instead of connecting it to a motherboard, the motherboard is connected to the GPU.
Perhaps most worryingly, according to Moore’s Law is Dead, the new GPU was so demanding that it was tripping circuit breakers and damaging power supplies – and even itself.
So it looks like the RTX 4090 Ti or RTX Titan Ada might not make an appearance anytime soon – at least until Nvidia sorts these issues out. There are also suggestions that Nvidia may defer even 27Gbps capable GDDR6 video memory or even GDDR7 to launch.
Will the wait be worth it? Right now, we can’t see the appeal of a super expensive (and powerful) RTX 4090 Ti. The RTX 4090 is about to be released, and that will offer a lot more power than most gamers need right now, so an even more powerful GPU won’t be on many people’s “must buy” lists.
If this next GPU is an RTX Titan, however, there’s more reason for it to exist – because of its corporate and creative uses – but no company is going to want to invest in GPUs that end up melting. We love to see companies like Nvidia being ambitious, but they also need to keep the needs of their consumers in mind.
