UK retailer scan.co.uk (opens in new tab) listed (and quickly withdrew) a new low-end Nvidia GPU, but unfortunately it’s not the RTX 4060 we were waiting to see. No, it’s a new version of the already excellent RTX 3060 Ti – now equipped with updated GDDR6X VRAM.
For reference, the original RTX 3060 Ti had 8GB of conventional GDDR6; the ‘X’ variant of memory is essentially faster and more efficient with slightly more overall power consumption. It’s also reportedly cheaper on the manufacturing backend, which might explain why Nvidia has put this card into production now.
We’ll be waiting for Nvidia’s more affordable RTX 4000 cards until next year, but it’s been known for some time that Team Green is working on at least three RTX 3000 series GPUs to keep things running. Given the absurd price of RTX 4090it’s not entirely surprising.
Analysis: A stopgap effort by Nvidia to stay relevant in the budget arena?
In fact, it looks like the GPU was originally leaked on Nvidia’s own website, with a link to order (but no checkout option) in Scan. Both sites now show no trace of the leak. Before it was removed, the price was listed at £369 ($399, AU$699) – the original UK RRP of the 3060 Ti.
Anyway, we will probably see this card actually hit the market very soon. Whether or not it’s a viable choice with an RTX 4060 potentially on the way is a different question; if you’re looking for a solid GPU for 1080p gaming, it’s not a bad choice. The new GDDR6X memory probably won’t make a big difference in most games – an increase to 12GB of VRAM would make a bigger difference.
It’s nice to see that Nvidia hasn’t completely abandoned the budget gaming space, if nothing else. With Intel’s new Arc GPUs landing this week and AMD offering some serious competition on the more affordable end of the market, Nvidia really needs to keep pace if it doesn’t plan on releasing the cheaper Lovelace graphics cards coming soon.
There’s a small trap to avoid falling into here; with Black Friday and cyber monday quickly approaching, we are almost certain to see some discounts on the RTX 3060 Ti. The 3060 Ti is a great GPU choice for 1080p gaming, but keep in mind that these sales will likely only feature the older GDDR6 models. If you’re buying a video card offer in the coming weeks, be sure to check out the specs.
